Red Alert as free download
According to Kotaku this Sunday Red Alert will celebrate it’s 13th birthday since the first Command & Conquer. As a celebration, and very likely promotion for Red Alert 3, there will be a free download of the original game starting Sunday 12:00 AM pacific time.
I went on to Red Alerts homepage but could not find anything about this promotion. I hope it’s true though. Will bring alot of memories back and it sure is easier than trying to find the old discs that are stashed away someplace.
Red Alert was probably one of the first games I played on a network, togheter with Doom of course.
Space Invaders making headlines
French-American artist Douglas Edric Stanley made an unbeatable version of the classic game Space Invaders! in which the two towers of the World Trade Center where under attack.
With the wounds of the attacks still fresh in memory the installation, made for the Games Convention in Leipzig (Germany), created more attention than the artist intended.
The installation spurred an on-line debate about what kind of messages that are “allowed” to convey through video games. With among others Slashdot and Kotaku posting and discussing the subject. The topic of what games really are have been discussed on this blog earlier.
The future of console gaming?
I read two articles over at Gamespot concerning the future of gaming [1, 2]. Both of them paint the future (in the articles put: 2020) as pretty grim for consoles.
What Gamespot wrote…
First sign of trouble is the amount of money being invested in Xbox360 and Playstation 3 by Microsoft and Sony respectivly. The length of time these machines have to be on the market to become profitible are much longer than their predecessors.
The new trend of downloaded content will have an impact on local stores carrying games, why should they keep selling games when games are bought on-line and consoles often sold at a loss? Also games will be played “on-line” much like the MMO games of today, with the bulk of the processing being done on a central server.
Technology is making new games even more realistic and the need to keep up with technology will favour PCs over consoles. While we wait for the next leap in techonology the game developers must focus on other characteristics of the game in order to win an advantage.
And now for my take on it…
This is what they said… but let’s reflect a little. They seem to predict the future of the gaming market by pure extrapolation of our current situation. Did any of them glance at Nintendo? Did anyone notice that Nintendo acctually put up a much “lesser machine” but still beats the crap out of the two others (in units sold at least)?
I have no figures at all but my guess is Nintendo is winning this battle easily while Sony and Microsoft are pouring in money to get second place. Why? Because Nintendo did not just extrapolate, they innovated! One thing did the articles at Gamespot get right, advanced graphics technology makes developers have to look to other solutions to set them apart and that’s just what Nintendo did. Is that a bad thing? As I remember we had the same situation back in the 8-bit days, only then we only had crappy graphics and the price went to whoever could invent something cool to do with it.
As I’ve said before the game market probably needs to be re-evaluated because new techonology and better graphics isn’t the only thing we want… honestly for myself I’d much rather have a great game than great graphics.
The argument about downloaded content carries some weight, game retailers might fear this one… but why stop selling consoles? People would need them to download the content and the retailers make money on selling the consoles, it’s the manufacturer that often subsidies them.
Playing games on-line through a service is currently almost only being done on PCs (mostly MMOs). This is however an advantage that might become a turningpoint for consoles if used correctly. As I remember one of the great advantages of the old Nintendo cartridges was that the cartridges where upgraded as time went by but the console stayed the same, by allowing games to “upgrade” the console the Nintendo probably lasted much longer than it would have with a non-evolving media. Having the whole Internet as media must mean that, if used correctly, you only need to have a machine capable of displaying the graphics and handling input and leave the rest up to the “super computer” at the other end!
The days of consoles might still be numbered, maybe some hybrid “home entetrainment machine” of some sort will take it’s place. Call it a PC if you’d like (because it will much likely have better resemblance to a PC than a console), however I do not believe any of the given arguments are enough to pursuade me of this change in the future.

Geekini – the bikini for geeks
Did anyone else just think “up up down down left right left right b a start”? My first reaction when I saw this picture was “Ok so where is start?”, of course it was in a very obvious place.
Final Fantasy XIII in 2 hour demo?
Square Enix has announced that bundled with the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children release will be a over 2 hour demo of the new Final Fantasy XIII. Over 2 hours? Is it just me or are those games getting insanely long? A demo with 2 hours worth of CGI movies (another post hints it’s mostly CGI movies) is kind of alot just to bring you into a new game.
I loved the story of Final Fantasy X and it was one of my favourite games among Final Fantasy… yet I can’t get myself to ever replay it (like I did many of the former ones) because the amount of mandatory speeches and movies are just to overwhelming.
Braid – innovation on Xbox Live
This is the first time I ever really wanted an Xbox… this game really looks just like a game I would love. Very nice artwork, innovative gameplay and “retro-feel” with references to old Super Mario games!
Pirates, DRM and game development
A couple of days ago an independant developer posted an open question to software pirates why they copy software. Now a few days later a small report is posted of the response he got to the open question. It’s a well worth read and even though I hardly think the major developers will change their strategy concerning pricing and DRM-systems it’s refreashing to read that someone is thinking about it. The conclusion in short was that while semi-political anti intellectual property and “pure theft” (ie I know I steal but I can get away with it) only accounted for a minor part of the replies. The main concerns where pricing, quality, availability and obtrusive DRMs. People complained about not being able to sponteneously being able to buy a game since pricing for console games is very high.
With downloadable games from some major developers maybe some of these concerns will be lifted.
Guitar Hero for C-64!
I’ve always wondered why Guitar Hero wasn’t invented earlier, but pushing it back to the early 80′s might be to optimistic? Toni Westbrook made an effort and we now have “Shredz64“, a Guitar Hero clone for the good old Commodore 64.
I admire people who can do hacks like these and would love to be able to do them myself!
